Transcript of AE 1012 - Aussie English: A Bloke
G'day, you mob. Pete here, from Aussie English. Welcome to the Aussie English podcast and video on YouTube as well, obviously. This is the number one place for anyone and everyone who wants to learn Australian English and today is another episode in the Aussie slang series where my goal is to teach you fair dinkum, true blue Aussie slang terms and expressions used down under by Aussies on a day-to-day basis.
Not all of them are used every single day, but a lot of them are. So, today I'm going to be teaching you the phrase or the word, "a bloke, a bloke". And you have to say this with a deep voice. "Bloke. Bloke." Yeah, he's an Aussie "bloke. Bloke". A "bloke" is Aussie slang for a man. Right. You probably wouldn't use this on anyone younger than 18 years old. So, you wouldn't use it for a boy.
You wouldn't use it for a kid, even if he is a male, a boy. You would use it for a man. "A bloke". This guy is "a bloke". He is "a bloke". So, if I was walking down the street and someone bumped into me, I might say to my friends, you know, oh, what the hell was that? What's with that "bloke"? Why did that "bloke" bump into me? It's why did that guy bump into me? Why did that man bump into me? Why did that- What's that "bloke's" problem?
What's his issue? What's his problem? Why did he bump into me? Another one might be you're walking down the street; someone turns around and you're like, holy crap, I recognise that person. I know this "bloke". I know this guy. I know this man. That "bloke" is a friend of mine. We go way back. That "bloke" and I, we go way back. "Bloke". So, that's about all there is to the word "bloke", guys.
You can use "bloke" to refer to a man. It's informal. It is Aussie slang. I suggest you go out there, give it a whirl, see what people say and listen out for it. Maybe you'll hear people saying "bloke" now on TV, in person, more frequently. Anyway, guys, don't forget, I release a second episode every week with these free episodes on the Aussie English podcast.
